The Passive House program seeks to reduce a home’s energy use by 80% when compared to a code-built home. Proper Passive House design, computer modeling, construction methods, and a blower door test are all key to certification, and much attention is given to solar gain, shading, thermal bridging, mechanical, ventilation, and the envelope. Passive House is a challenging certification and it’s not necessary to be a member of any organization to certify a project. One must either pass a challenging exam or certify a project to be called a Passive House Builder, Designer, or Consultant.
