When buying appliances, remember there are two price tags: the actual price of the appliance and the energy and water costs you incur monthly to operate them. By incorporating advanced technologies and premium features, ENERGY STAR® appliances may help offset initial costs through energy savings over the life of the unit. Appliances that have earned the ENERGY STAR® label meet strict energy efficiency criteria without sacrificing performance or design.
Many qualified appliances often feature the yellow EnerGuide label. The label indicates how much energy is used to operate each appliance and provides an energy scale for you to compare products, and also indicates the approximate annual operating costs.
Refrigerators
Refrigerators are one of the highest energy-consuming products in your home. A new ENERGY STAR® refrigerator is 20% more energy efficient than new conventional models. Some of today’s ENERGY STAR® refrigerators use less electricity than a 60-watt incandescent light bulb ran continuously. More efficient operation means that newer models are quieter; redesigned doors provide better insulation to keep food fresher, and deeper doors provide more space for commonly used items.
Dehumidifiers
Dehumidifiers reduce the amount of moisture in the air. Reducing the moisture leads to a healthy home environment by preventing mold, mildew, and odour.
Dishwashers
New ENERGY STAR® dishwashers are at least 20% more energy efficient than new conventional models. ENERGY STAR® dishwashers have “smart” features that minimize water use and demand on the water heater and allow for quieter operation and less pre-rinsing. Construction includes more effective washing action, energy-efficient motors and other advanced technology, such as sensors that determine the length of the wash cycle and the temperature of the water necessary to clean the dishes. Always be sure to consider factors such as how much water the dishwasher uses per cycle. Less water means less cost to operate. To save even more energy, avoid using the heated dry cycle. Instead, let your dishes air dry.
Clothes Washers
ENERGY STAR® washers come in front-loading and top-loading models. Both use over 50% less water and 30% less energy than standard washers saving a typical household about $50 per year in energy costs. ENERGY STAR® qualified clothes washers incorporate high-quality features for improved performance. Gentler operation, more thorough rinsing, and the removal of more water in the spin cycle make washing clothes more convenient and help protect your clothing investment. Front-loading machines feature washtubs that move clothes horizontally, similar to dryers. Top-loading ENERGY STAR® washers use sensor technology to control water temperature and volume, then use high-pressure spray rinses to remove soap from clothes.
